HISTORY OF TRANSLATION POSTER EXHIBITION BY IUE ENGLISH TRANSLATION AND INTERPRETING STUDENTS
Senior students of the Department of English Translation and Interpreting have held a poster exhibition titled “Intralingual and Intersemiotic Translation” as a part of their History of Translation course.
The lecturer of the course and the Head of Department of English Translation and Interpreting Prof. Dr. Neslihan Kansu-Yetkiner stated that students had the opportunity to analyze texts from Turkish literature historically as a part of the course and that the focal point was Intralingual and Intersemiotic Translation, two other types of translation aside from the well-known interlingual translation. Prof. Dr. Neslihan Kansu-Yetkiner explained that while preparing for the exhibition, students analyzed examples of intralingual translation and then turned their findings into posters. Within this scope, some of the analyzed literary works were Halide Edip Adıvar’s Sinekli Bakkal, Halit Ziya Uşaklıgil’s Mai ve Siyah, Mehmet Rauf’s Eylül and Recaizade Mahmut Ekrem’s Araba Sevdası. As for the examples of intersemiotic translation, students focused on the prominent literary works in Turkish literature being transferred into auditory arts (music, songs), visual arts (painting, sculpture, photography), kinetic languages (ballet, pantomime), and multimodal languages (cinema, opera). Literary works such as Orhan Kemal’s Murtaza, Necati Cumalı’s Susuz Yaz, Yaşar Kemal’s Ağrı Dağı Efsanesi, Aziz Nesin’s Ne yaşar Ne Yaşamaz, Adalet Ağaoğlu’s Fikrimin İnce Gülü, Kerime Nadir’s Hıçkırık, Reşat Nuri Güntekin’s Acımak and Yaprak Dökümü, and Peyami Safa’s Fatih Harbiye have been analyzed with various adaptations in the posters on intersemiotic translation.
Prof. Dr. Neslihan Kansu-Yetkiner stated that in the exhibition consisting of 40 different posters by 40 students, students gained an awareness regarding the prominent works of Turkish literature, and finished her remarks by saying that they have held poster exhibitions on the history of translation each year with a different theme within the scope of History of Translation course, and they will continue to organize poster exhibitions each year with different research topics.
