WORLD MATHEMATICS AND PI DAY AT IEU

The “World Mathematics and Pi Day” celebration, which is traditionally organized by IUE Department of Mathematics every year, took place on March 14, 2023 this year. The opening speech was made by IEU Department of Mathematics faculty member Prof. Dr.  Ismihan Bayramoglu. Bayramoğlu started his speech by commemorating those who lost their lives in the 6 February earthquake. He also touched upon the fact that one of the causes of the earthquake disaster was the lack of understanding of the importance and weight of mathematics in the fields of engineering and architecture. He emphasized that everyone who wants to do useful works should learn mathematics in the best way and thus perform their job in the best way.

Uluç Şahinalp and Mariia Fedorova from EPAM Systems attended the event as invited speakers. Uluç Şahinalp, who works as a Cloud Engineering Manager at EPAM, talked about the processing, analysis and storage of big data on the cloud. He stressed the importance of knowing good math to understand and interpret data. Mariia Fedorova, who also works as a talent development specialist in the same company, emphasized the need for a solid mathematical foundation for those who want to pursue a career in information technologies and the importance of mathematics in modern computer science.

At the end of the hybrid event, Head of IUE Department of Mathematics Prof. Dr. G. Yazgı Tütüncü thanked the invited speakers and participants and made the closing speech emphasizing the meaning and importance of the day. Tütüncü underlined how important mathematics is in our lives, especially for high school students who participated in the event, and that knowing good mathematics will definitely lead them to success, regardless of which profession they will choose in the future.
