In Memory of Prof. Dr. Canan Başar Eroğlu: A Legacy of Science, Dedication, and Kindness

A memorial service was held on June 3, 2026, at the Conference Hall to honor the late Prof. Dr. Canan Başar Eroğlu, a revered faculty member of the Department of Psychology at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. The ceremony drew a large gathering of university members, colleagues, students, loved ones, and family members, all coming together to pay their respects.

The ceremony commenced at 15:30 with an opening presentation by Assoc. Prof. Ilgın Aktener, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, who shared an overview of Prof. Dr. Canan Başar Eroğlu’s distinguished academic biography. Throughout her illustrious 53-year career, Prof. Dr. Başar Eroğlu authored nearly 140 international publications and assumed pioneering roles across global institutions. The presentation highlighted her monumental contributions to science, noting that following her graduation from Hacettepe University, she went on to establish the groundbreaking EEG Laboratories at Lübeck and Bremen universities, and most recently, right here at Izmir University of Economics.

Following the biography presentation, Dean Prof. Dr. Neslihan Yetkiner and Rector Prof. Dr. Yusuf Hakan Abacıoğlu delivered their remarks. They emphasized that beyond her eminent standing in the scientific community, Canan Hoca was an extraordinary individual whose work ethic, grace, and generosity left a profound and lasting impact on the lives of countless colleagues and students she mentored.

Highlighting her human side alongside her academic achievements, Prof. Dr. Başar Eroğlu’s daughter and son took the floor to share their feelings while honoring their mother’s cherished memory.

In the final part of the program, a heartfelt open-mic session allowed attendees to share their personal reflections. Among those who spoke were former Rector Prof. Dr. Murat Aşkar, former Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences Prof. Dr. İsmihan Bayramoğlu, and Assoc. Prof. Nevra Ersoy from the Department of Psychology, alongside many of her close colleagues and students, who stepped up from the audience to recount their memories and pay tribute to their beloved professor.

We remember our dear Canan Hoca, who left an indelible mark on both our university and the wider scientific world, with the deepest respect, love, and longing. Our heartfelt condolences go out to her family and our entire university community.
