IZMIR UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS’ ‘TRANSLATION’ SUCCESS!
Entrepreneurial students of Izmir University of Economics (IUE), where the medium of instruction is English, proved that they have a say in translation and interpretation. IUE translators came in first place and second place at the Young Translators Competition for two consecutive years held by the Ministry of EU Affairs. Osman Tufan, senior from IUE Department of English Translation and Interpreting came in first place, and Berfu Solak came in second place.
Last year, Ahmedşah Bilgi, from IUE Department of English Translation and Interpreting came in first place, and Yasemin Memiş and Mustafa Serhat Atalay, shared the second prize at the competition which aims to raise awareness regarding translation studies that play an important role during Turkey’s European Union accession, and proved Izmir Economics’ success in English education. Tufan and Solak received their awards from Ambassador Selim Yenel, Acting Undersecretary of Ministry of European Union Affairs. Lecturers Prof. Dr. Neslihan Yetkiner and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Şahin from IUE Department of English Translation and Interpreting accompanied the students to the ceremony that took place in Ankara.
‘Job offers lined up’
The first prize winner Osman Tufan reported that that total of 158 students from 35 universities attended the competition held in three languages (123 in English, 21 in German, and 14 in French), and he said, “We’ve attended a recognized, important competition in translation industry. It has been such a joy for us. I’ve received many job offers. That is also a source of pride for us. We’ve received the best training at the University. The fact that our academicians offered external sources and treated us very friendly contributed greatly to our success. I am doing a double major at Department of Political Science and International Relations. I plan to complete my graduate and Ph.D. degree as I continue to excel in the field of translation”.
Second prize winner Berfu Solak also stated that they went through an intensive period of preparation, and Izmir University of Economics proved once again its success in translation studies. Solak, who is also doing a double major at Department of Political Science and International Relations, said that she received many job offers and she would continue to work in that field.
