2023-24 Spring Semester Faculty of Arts and Sciences Opening Lecture
İzmir Economy University, Faculty of Arts and Sciences hosted expert psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Yankı Yazgan to give the opening lecture for the 2023-24 Spring Semester. Yazgan delivered a presentation titled "Being Young: From the Perspective of Brain and Mental Development."
He set his speech off by explaining the importance of cortical thinning and neural pruning in the human brain during the transition from childhood to adulthood. Mentioning that brain development is slower in individuals diagnosed with ADHD (Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder), Yazgan emphasized that the support received from social environments, such as family and school, can reduce the likelihood of ADHD diagnosis. He then addressed the issue of risk-taking and depression in youth, noting that the ages between 16-18, the peak period for risk-taking and depressive tendencies, also happens to be the time when we make critical decisions in life, such as career choices. Furthermore, Yazgan expressed that genetic factors also play a role in the predisposition to depression and showed data indicating that for the individuals who carry the risk gene, the probability of major depression increases significantly with the number of stressful life events encountered.
Next, Yazgan highlighted the developmental importance of self-control. He discussed the classic psychology experiment known as the Marshmallow Test, stating that children who could control themselves and delay instant gratification at the early ages of 4-5 tended to have more successful careers in their adult years. Yazgan also explained that a reassuring environment contributes to enhancing children's impulse control and future-oriented thinking abilities.
Before concluding his lecture, Yazgan discussed the relationship between poverty and brain development, and stated that children from low-income families, lacking proper nutrition, a safe environment, and healthy parental communication, tend to have less convoluted brain surfaces. He also shared significant findings showing that an increase in income correlates with enhanced brain activity in infants.
The lecture, which shed light on topics such as youth, brain development, and mental health, was met with great interest by both our students and academics. Following the valuable contributions from the participants, Rector Prof. Dr. Yusuf Hakan Abacıoğlu and Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences Prof. Dr. Neslihan Kansu Yetkiner expressed their gratitude to Prof. Dr. Yankı Yazgan and presented him with gifts. The Dean underlined that the Faculty of Arts and Sciences seminar series will continue with a commitment to providing scientific contributions and services to society. She also expressed their intent to invite distinguished figures from diverse fields as guest speakers in upcoming events.
